BIG DATA is everywhere. Countries around the world are striving hard to get the better of this industry and grow it within their territory as fast as possible. India doesn’t seem to be behind with the same task but there are certain elements that act as hurdles in the process. Big data is a combination of business, social and machinery data all together in order to procure new insights.
According to Wikipedia-”Big data is a broad term for data sets so large or complex that traditional data processing applications are inadequate.” It is also about mixing past data with the real time records in order zero in or predict results in the current or future context. Collection of such data requires a lot of market research and analysis with regards to the respective industry. Though the BIG DATA niche is growing in India, there are certain aspects which are working against the flourish and slowing the rates at which the technology is spreading out to the entire nation.

1) Slow growth of Digital Landscape in India-
The digital landscape in India is growing but at a snail pace, as per the market research study only 1 out of every 5 Indian was using Internet by the end of 2014. Though there is massive requirements for information in companies from several business verticals; most of them are just in their initial stages of learning the right ways of collecting and preserving data.
Travel industry and Telecommunication are top sectors making most use of big data technology. Many more sectors are ought to explore it in the coming years and its usage is expected to blow up by many times. Big data management especially in public sector in India need loads of improvement.
2) Computerization is the need of the hour-
Utmost important sectors such as infrastructure, healthcare, education and more are still to be automated. This scenario is quite similar in both the public and private industries-with of course the latter being a bit better. The major reason for this has been the late adaptation of Information Technology in India; unlike the developed nations. However, things are being placed on track as government is severely pushing in the computerized pattern of working in different business sections. The attempt towards ‘E-governance‘ is a big step for the same. Similarly, the private companies has improved robustly in the last decade or so.
3) Quality Data is not available-
Indians generally aren’t over expressive by nature, they differ in this when compared to the west. We aren’t comfortable about discussing things or placing our viewpoints on public forums. This is a vital issue as it just doesn’t affect the quantity of information (data) available but also its quality.
Massive access to random facts and figures, fake accounts on social media (in a big number) and limited relevant information available from individuals are few direct demerits of data availability in India due to which the big data segment lacks in India.
Spamming is a top layered problem as far as the social media progress in India is concerned. People need to grow aware about the issue and discourage it in a big format especially on the social media platforms. This is eating up on the reliability factor of the data available-in simple words spamming is an enemy to data accuracy in India and around the globe.
5) Big diversity in culture and social elements-
India being a vast nation, it is very difficult to gather and understand consumer information. It is equally tough for any data collection for that matter of fact. For example: a consumer in the northern parts of the country will have different priorities, likes and dislikes as compared to the guy from the south.
This gets even worse when the regional and lingual aspects are bought in. Therefore, collection, preservation and using of data is a muddy task in India wherein in the west it is extremely easy.
By 2020, there will be a 25% growth in usable information in India, making BIG DATA technologies mandatory
6) Unstructured data must go-
With all the technological backup, it’s high time that India throws off the unstructured pattern of working. A particular suitable structure for each and every business category needs to be constructed and followed religiously. Big data needs to enter and get improved in a sorted format in all industries mainly in healthcare, education and infrastructure to start with. This will bring in a storming change in the way the country functions and save an unaccountable amount of resources.
7) Internet/Instant connectivity-
This point for one is the least worrying as India is doing tremendously well in telecom and connectivity. Yet there is a need for faster changes and better reach which is lacking at present. The “mobile first” approach is an excellent way to being the reforms and the outcomes are expected to be enormous.
There are two things that the government in partnership with private players need to concentrate on; though the number of mobile Internet users is high in India, there are just less than 10% of3G (third generation) Internet users around the country-this need to be boosted heavily. The other aspect is the speed of Internet in India, with such vast client base it is hurting that India has the slowest Internet speed in Asia. These limitations are barring the consumer data accessibility especially in the retail sector which is the biggest and the fastest growing patch of business in India.
Big Data will need better backing from Internet providing companies in India in order to rise up to brighter days.
