The Indian coal industry has experienced an incredible decade with many new developments in the market structure, policies, and demand- supply. In the global arena, India stands third in terms of tonnage of coal produced and fourth in terms of total energy value of coal produced. To meet the increasing energy needs of the growing population and to back the industrialization process, India has to depend on coal as thelikes of other developing economies such as China and Africa. While many policy-level issues being currently dealt and the outlook with many uncertainties, coal in India is likely to remain the mainstay fuel till the year 2050, unless nuclear is aggressively pursued.

Indian demand for coal is primarily driven by planned growth in power capacity addition of 18 gigawatts per year, steel production of nine million tons per year and cement production of six percent annual growth rate. In terms of consumption, power and cement sectors alone consume 80 percent of total non-coking coal produced in India, and the respective growth in these sectors of the order eight to nine percent has outpaced the coal production growth in the country. These past trends have made imports as an alternative option, and the recent coal crisis and policy mess-up has pushed coal imports as the most viable option. Superior coking properties of coal has invited the imports of coking coal by Indian steel gia
