The telecom tower industry is a building block of wireless telecommunication in India. The industry has impressively evolved from pure play captive model to the independent tower business model over the years. The telecom tower base has substantially expanded in the country to meet the increased infrastructure need of the growing subscriber base. However the industry has witnessed decline in the growth of tower addition in last couple of years due to overcapacity in the urban region, less than expected roll out of 3G services and massive debt burden on the telecom service providers making network expansion very difficult. Telecom infrastructure sharing has brought a revolutionary change in the capital intensive telecom tower industry by enabling the telecom operators to reduce capex and opex cost to a considerable extent.

Infrastructure status to the tower industry in Oct. 2012 is the much needed boost, especially when the companies have been mandated and are also planning to switch to renewable energy sources. The uncertainty related to inclusion of tower industry under Unified Licensing has been delayed till further announcement. Over last couple of years, the tower industry is facing the heat especially from the local go
